Following the recent publication of an opinion piece by Russian
political prisoners, UCL reaffirms its support for all those who oppose
the war and Russian imperialism, and joins the calls to fight for the
release of all political prisoners. ---- A recent opinion piece by
Russian political prisoners[1]further sheds light on the extent of the
Kremlin's repression of its population, both in terms of the number of
people imprisoned for the slightest criticism (of the regime or the war
in Ukraine), and the unabashed arbitrariness of the judicial system,
subservient to the authorities.
The combination of particularly long prison sentences and the almost
systematic brutalization of inmates (torture, denial of medical care,
increased sentences by transforming complaints against the prison
administration into offenses) turns Russian prisons into a machine for
crushing human lives.
All dissent is crushed, which is why Russian jails include Russian
ultranationalists critical of the Kremlin like Igor Girkin, Ukrainians
(some of them nationalists, like one of the signatories of the op-ed,
Vladimir Domnin), and anti-war liberal democrats like the young people
of the "Vesna" movement.
Anarchists are not left out, with several dozen of them imprisoned,
whether following the "Network Affair"[2]fabricated by the FSB in 2018
or following the arson attacks on recruitment centers and other anti-war
statements since 2022.
From an internationalist perspective, we join the calls to fight for
the release of political prisoners and assure our support to all those
who oppose the war and Russian imperialism. We also support those
imprisoned for their real or perceived participation in the self-defense
of the Ukrainian people.

[2]The "Network Affair" refers to the alleged dismantling of an
anarchist terrorist organization in 2018 in Russia and Belarus. This
organization never existed, but it led to the arrest of around ten
relatively young Russian anarchists and anti-fascists, who were
sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
