The XV Latin American Meeting of Autonomous Popular Organizations took
place on January 25th and 26th of this year. This year's edition was
held in the La Bandera community in Santiago, Chile. The meeting aims to
foster coordination and exchange knowledge among independently organized
organizations and social movements. Representatives of nearly 100
organizations, movements, and collectives from Brazil, Argentina, Chile,
Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, and the United States participated in the
event. Various thematic panels addressed, in particular, the issue of
patriarchy, the construction of popular power, and the possibility of
coordinating struggles across Latin America.
Calls for solidarity against the repression faced by several of these
movements stood out. Among them are the lawsuits filed by teachers and
workers in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, for organizing against
the pension reform project being pushed by the local government.
The Chilean comrades brought a strong denunciation of the disappearance
of environmental activist Julia Chuñil, president of the Putreguel
Indigenous Community and responsible for defending Mapuche ancestral
territories. Julia had been facing threats from local businessmen
interested in exploiting the community's natural resources. The activist
disappeared on November 8, 2024. Since then, the organizations
participating in Elaopa have intensified a campaign demanding her
reappearance alive from local authorities.
During the meeting, it was also decided that the next Elaopa will be
held in Brazil in 2027. While the date and location have not yet been
set, the event will focus on the ethno-racial issue and the fight
against racism and colonialism.
