The six union members from Xixón, known as the La Suiza 6, were
sentenced to three and a half years in prison for "coercing" the owner
of a bakery who had violated labor rights and extorted a fellow union
member. The legal defense and the CNT (National Workers' Union)
requested a suspension of the sentence, citing the evident violation of
rights in the ruling. This suspension was denied by Court No. 1 of
Xixón, where Judge Lino Rubio, an ultraconservative judge who sentenced
long-standing union members linked to the Naval Xixón protests to prison
in 2007.
The case of the La Suiza 6 is a flagrant violation of protest and union
action as a fundamental right of the working class to organize. It also
sets a very serious criminal precedent for any collective union action.
We live in a time of advancing reactionary positions. The continued
attack on transformative ideas that transcend capitalism is palpable in
all spheres. At this moment, a new attack on social protest and unionism
is taking place, exemplified by this sentence.
The conviction of the Swiss 6 for practicing active unionism is not just
an attack on their comrades; it is an attempt to destroy the
self-organization of the working class. This is not a blow to a few
people: it is a message to the entire working class that organizes to
fight for our rights.
Therefore, we must speak out against this unjust situation. We cannot
fall into discouragement or paralysis. In the face of repression by the
state and capital, let us organize solidarity. If this attack against a
traditional form of struggle of the labor movement occurs, it is
precisely because the state and capital have seen their opportunity. We
cannot allow them to get away with it. Pickets and escraches are a
fundamental tool of direct action and struggle that must not be taken
away from us under any circumstances.
Let's expand and generalize them!
Comrades, you are not alone. We walk alongside you and we want you to
know that we will support you and never stop encouraging you. You are
being repressed for being combative, brave, and supportive. We hope you
emerge victorious from this grave situation, because it will be a
triumph for all of us.
