The first TIM-managed antenna was installed in 1998, the second 
multi-manager in 2013, the third INWIT S.p.A. currently being installed, 
which, once the work is completed, will be 5G (fifth generation). And 
there is a fourth WIND3 that has not yet started work. There is concern, 
and it is a lot. If from 1998 to today with 2G, 3G and 4G in a radius of 
300 meters around the mobile telephone antennas in San Biagio Platani 
more than 60 people have fallen ill with oncological diseases, of which 
20 have died, with 5G it will be even worse. Because with 5G, the 
population's exposure limits to radio frequency electromagnetic fields 
will increase, which will be emitted in frequency bands (694-790 MHz, 
3.6-3.8 GHz and 26.5-27.5 GHz). Those currently used for 4G mobile 
telephony range from 800 MHz to 2.6 GHz.

According to scientist Alessandro Polichetti of the Istituto Superiore 
di Sanità in Rome, "the only effects on human health of electromagnetic 
fields that have been ascertained by scientific research are the 
short-term effects, of a thermal nature, due to interaction mechanisms 
between the fields and biological organisms. The energy transported by 
an electromagnetic wave incident on the human body is partly reflected, 
partly absorbed, and partly transmitted by the body itself. The 
electromagnetic energy absorbed by the tissues of the human body is 
converted into heat, thus causing an increase in the body's temperature. 
The body can tolerate temperature increases of less than 1°, a threshold 
below which no harmful effects on health occur."

Six minutes is the biological time necessary for cells to dissipate the 
heat produced by the electromagnetic field established by Regulation no. 
381 of 11 September 1998 establishing radio frequency ceilings 
compatible with human health. Clearly the electromagnetic field must be 
measured and according to the national reference framework law, 36/2001, 
the parameter to be respected so that electromagnetic waves do not cause 
damage to health must be 6V/m. Therefore the average of the measurement 
with the Prime Ministerial Decree of 8/7/2003 was established at six 
minutes. However, the Development Decree of the Monti government imposed 
the measurement on the 24-hour average, which is an arbitrary parameter 
and unrelated to biological and health assessments. It means that during 
the day the electromagnetic emission goes above 6V/m, then once work or 
relational activities are over, it drops during the night. In the end 
the parameters according to the aforementioned average will be respected.

5G, having greater radio frequency power, will require the installation 
of numerous antennas with the need to increase the legal limits to 
encourage the development of telecommunications networks. Aimed not only 
at communication between people, but also at the so-called "internet of 
things", in which various wireless devices communicate directly with 
each other.

  The Meloni government is thinking about this with a new law decree 
that will raise the emissions of electromagnetic waves from 6V/m to 
24V/m. Thus the various companies such as TIM, Vodafone, Wind3, Iliad 
and Fastweb will say thank you, taking home 1.3 billion euros each.

In San Biagio Platani everything started in mid-December 2023. Learning 
by chance about the installation of the new antennas - and not that it 
was the mayor who informed the population - we immediately took action 
by organizing the first citizen assembly at the the council chamber on 
27 December 2023, in which some decisions were made: to appeal to the 
C.G.A., to appoint a private agency to detect the electromagnetic field, 
to draw up the antenna allocation plan to reduce the risk of exposure of 
the population (art. 8 L.36/01) and organize a strike. Initiatives that 
the administration and the mayor would have personally supported. But 
this was not the case, since even today, after more than a month, they 
have not kept their commitment.

Meanwhile, the nascent No Antennas Committee was immediately 
operational. The day after the assembly, a request was presented to the 
ASP of Agrigento to release the list of all the people who had fallen 
ill with oncological diseases in the last 25 years. A protest was 
organized for 4 January 2024 at the location of the new antenna, in 
which around fifty people participated. Subsequently, a request was 
submitted to ARPA-Sicily for a survey of the electromagnetic field of 
the old antennas on 26 January 2024. Finally, through an IT technician 
we uploaded the area around the antennas to Google Maps, both with the 
positioning of the antennas and with all the homes of people suffering 
from oncological diseases. We are awaiting the results of the ARPA and 
on January 29th we presented a letter to the municipality protocol 
addressed to the mayor, with which we ask that an appeal be made to the 
C.G.A. and the suspension of work on the new 5G antenna INWIT S.p.A., 
citing very specific reasons: art. 5 L.36/2001 (environmental and 
landscape protection measures), paragraph 3 letter f (preventive 
evaluation of pre-existing electromagnetic fields) and health 
demonstration of the greater incidence of oncological diseases in the 
areas surrounding the antennas currently in operation.
