(en) France, UCL AL #346 - Gender-based and sexual violence: January 11, 2024, feminist mobilization (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 8 Mar 2024 08:13:20 +0200

In the wake of the scandal surrounding the "Depardieu affair" and Emmanuel Macron's statements, the collective of feminist associations and unions #feministstrike called for rallies in front of courts or prefectures this January 11 with the slogan: "Keep your old world, we want one without sexist and sexual violence". ---- The TV show "Complément d'énquête" recently highlighted Depardieu's totally unacceptable comments and actions towards women, reviving in the media his indictment in 2020 for rape and sexual assault.

The list of all those implicated is only growing: we think in particular of the case of Benoit Jacquot denounced by Judith Godrèche. This reveals issues that go beyond the simple individual case: sexual assaults committed by celebrities are often known to everyone, and the system protects them. We can therefore only welcome the counter-tribunal signed by 600 artists in response to that of the elite of the seventh art published in Le Figaro fearing the end of Depardieu's career.

But in any case, at the highest summit of the state, it had already been decided: "Gérard Depardieu makes France proud", "there is the presumption of innocence". A great admirer of the actor, Emmanuel Macron denounces an alleged "manhunt". Not a word for the victims... Today we could qualify the President of the Republic as a defender of the alleged attackers. In any case, this is not his first attempt. Let us remember the Darmanin affair, or that of Nicolas Hulot when he discredited feminists by comparing them to an "Inquisition society" making them executioners.

By invalidating the words of the victims denouncing these words and these actions, Emmanuel Macron can destroy the hopes of recognition of the harm suffered and the attempts at reconstruction of these women. Like his political record in matters of great national cause, self-proclaimed leader in the fight against violence against women, he has once again emptied this absolute necessity of its meaning.

A reversal of harmful stigmas
On November 25, there were still thousands of us in the streets to influence the course of events by demanding means to fight against violence against women and gender minorities. Many of us deal with it daily, because unfortunately, the exercise of violence is not only the responsibility of powerful people and public figures.

But unlike anonymous everyday predators, known attackers, through their influence and notoriety, legitimize the cowardice and violence of all others as acceptable social norms.

On March 8, we will be in the streets again, in particular to denounce the violence carried out by our bosses and our hierarchical superiors through our working conditions, the poor management of harassment and violence in companies and institutions. Free domestic work for women remains. The patriarchy is so used to counting on it that when women continue the work they already do at home on a paid basis, they are underpaid, insecure, mistreated and their social function devalued.

We do not accept it and that is why we will not give up.
