(en) France, UCL AL #346 - International, Greece: We are not afraid of ruins (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 1 Mar 2024 10:01:14 +0200

Sunday January 14, the UCL Savoies Group welcomed Yannis Youlountas for the militant preview presentation of his new film, We are not afraid of ruins. The opportunity to return to the struggles of residents of the Exarcheia district in Athens, against the hard right of Mitsotakis who, coming to power in Greece in 2019, promised to put an end to the "anti-authoritarian" district. Yannis Youlountas films the struggle, its actresses and actors, always rebellious and united.
Sunday January 14, with the Attac de Savoie collective, we welcomed Yannis and Maud Youlountas for a day dedicated to struggle and solidarity. The UCL Savoies group, accompanied by libertarian comrades, revolutionary trade unionists and anarcho-syndicalists, set up at 10 a.m. at the Jean Renoir room in Chambéry to cook collectively and to music a soup kitchen with vegetables collected the day before at the market.

For the occasion we redecorated the space in red and black, installed a press table and put on sale books from our stock and from one of our partners, the Chambery cooperative bookseller, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Yannis and Maud came on their side with a number of books on Greece, t-shirts in support of different struggles and olive oil to sell in support of the fight against the construction of the airport from Kastelli in Crete. Finally, we had set up a space to collect donations for the solidarity convoys to Greece; concrete actions of direct solidarity are an integral part of our struggles.

"Reclaim the beach", that is to say "Reclaim the beach", can we read on this banner (intended for tourists) during an action against the privatization of beaches.
"We are not afraid of ruins, we carry a new world in our hearts.»

At 2 p.m. we sat down for the screening of this fourth film by Yannis which continues to document from the inside the struggles taking place in Greece, and here mainly in the rebellious district of Exarcheia, condemned to vilification by the government right wing of Mitsotakis. And as in his previous opuses, Let's no longer live like slaves (2013), I fight therefore I am (2015) and Love and the Revolution (2018), Yannis shows all of life, the creativity which is at the heart struggles for a united, self-managed world, freed from the domination of the State and capital.

The same emancipatory breath runs through these struggles where anti-fascism, the fight against the gentrification of a neighborhood, the reception of migrants, the opposition to the construction of an airport in Crete and, on the island of Paros in the Cyclades, a population committed against the privatization of beaches, so that they become a common good again, for the happiness of all. And always the joy and the will to never give in to renunciation.

David (UCL Savoies)
