(en) Poland, Warsaw, Anarchists Against Hypocrisy of the 3rd Council of Europe Summit

Warsaw is again a fortress city as world leaders gather here for the 3rd
Council of Europe Summit. Politicians from as many as 50 countries (CoE
countries plus observers) are expected in the city.
Anarchists have organized a range of protest actions against the summit.
On the weekend, a critical conference was held, despite the efforts of
Warsaw University to shut us down. At the conference, people were able
to hear about some of the functions of the CoE, their cooperation with
organizations such as the OECD, OSCE, WB, IMF, etc. and some
little-known activities of CoE. Special attention was paid to the human
rights record in CoE countries, the relation between PACE (Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe) and economic restructuring in
post-communist countries, criticism of the contradictory aspects of many
of their recommendations, such as for the removal of refugees (humane
deportation), of their new anti-terrorism policies, of the work of the
Council of Europe Development Bank, etc. etc. Some films were also shown
and anarchist literature was available. The conference was fairly well
covered in the print media and TV; the Polish press agency and a couple
of newspapers actually printed a good portion of our criticisms, so we
were satisfied that the message reached a lot of people. The key
speakers were activists from the Anarchist Federation, Praga, Warsaw and
Gdansk sections.
Anarchists also greated the guests arriving with a visit to their hotels
in the evening. People from FA Praga, Bialystok, Czestochowa and
Tri-City bothered visiting statespeople. Despite the illegal nature of
the action, the police decided not to beat us up in front of world
leaders and the press as we were protesting about human rights abuses.
Other actions included billboarding and a film showing. More actions are
expected to be held in the next two days as the Council meets in this
city.
