The Projectile festival of anarchist film, art and discussion was
celebrated over the weekend in Newcastle. Scores of people attended
the event, displaying a rare convergence of veteran British anarchists
in their 60's and the new generation in their 20's.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of the festival was the opportunity for
the two generations to share their stories, experiences and perspectives.
Films which saw their UK premiere included: "Aurora De Esperanza"
(Dawning of Hope), a propaganda film made during the height of the
Spanish revolutio and one of only six fictional movies made by the
CNT film collective; Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis's new film "The Take"
about factory occupations in Argentina; and the new documentary
"Emma Goldman: An Exceedingly Dangerous Woman", originally produced
for public television in the US.

"We soon discovered that we were spoilt for choice when it came to
films around the subject of anarchism and left libertarianism, so we
are only offering a selection of what's available", said the
organisers, "We wanted to include both documentaries and features,
full-length films and shorts. We also wanted to cover the areas of
anarchist history, action, and art - and we hope these selections go
some way towards doing that".

The festival also featured discussion on direct action, syndicalism,
art, the prison-industrial system and alternative economics. The UK
network of anarchists in academia also held a one-day meeting ahead
of the festival, which discussed libertarian education and the
connections between activism and research.

The festival took place at the same time as the Labour party
conference, which was held just accross the river Tyne. A large
police presence was felt throughout, especially since everyone from
anti-war to pro-hunting protesters were there to make their voices
heard - though for once it wasn't the anarchists who were at the
centre of police attention.
