(en) Turkey, Istanbul, 'Durakkondu'*to Taksim Square Against the Destructions [tr]]
Date

On 20th of August, Saturday, at 11.00, a bus stop in
front of Taksim Gezi Park has been occupied and
transformed to a 'durakkondu' by a group of anarchists.
After the action, which was held to protest 'kondu' destructions
that was done in last months and planned to be done in future as
a part of Urban Renovation Project in Istanbul & to show
solidarity with those people living in the streets, tents, bus
stops as their houses had been destroyed, 'durakkondu' was left
with its waxcloth door, carpet in front of it,
slippers and pot plant inside ready to settle.
Activists expressing that every person has right to
shelter from birth and that it is not a right to give
and take, told that empty buildings should be used by
anyone who needs a shelter. While 'gecekondu's are
named as black spots in Istanbul, they have showed
their ideas about the people's being forced to live in
stops and tents with hanging a "bl@ck spot" ["kar@
leke"] banner on the 'durakkondu' they have built up.
While drawing attention to the immediate execution of
Urban Renovation Project even without waiting it to
become a law, right after Tayyip declaring his
brillant ideas such as putting visa enforcement for
Istanbul, activists are thinking that the logic of "go
back whereever u come from" had started to run. They
have announced that it is the state's economic
strategy and the results of war forcing people to
migrate, it is the state not the ones building
'gecekondu' responsible
of it, those forfeiting people for a life long from
their places, their homes should be expelled.
On 28th of August, bw. 13.00-17.00, "No to the
Destructions Meeting" will be organized at Kadiköy
Wharf Square against the Urban Renovation Project.

*[Ed. Note: The word 'kondu' means 'built up/settled'
in Turkish. When it's used together with 'gece'
('night') as 'gecekondu', it means
'nightly-settled/built-up' as a name used for the
squatter areas of lower class people who had moved to
bigger cities from rural areas. As a new word
'durakkondu' means; '(bus)-stop-settled'.]
