ARA* was at both events with the new Turning the Tide.
There was a small anarchist contingent at the immigrants
rights march in ELA, and there may have been a few at
the other one downtown. The politics were theoretically
better at the ELA march although somebody got it into
their head to distribute USA flags to everyone there. The
ELA crowd was much larger and much more grassroots,
mostly Mexicano. Downtown was smaller, more lefties,
more international. There was a split between IAC and
ANSWER, and between Juan Jose Gutierrez and Carlos
Montes (shorthand for both splits) that resulted in two
separate marches.
October 22 had about 5-600 people, mostly young,
and mostly of color, Mexicano/Latino & Black, many
anarchists, everybody in black anarchist or not because
that's the slogan/style of O22 (Wear Black-Fight Back!)
Heavy police presence and more of the streets around
Parker Center sealed off than usual. They circulated
a warning alert to all the businesses in downtown about
the march.
Incidentally, I was also at the Million Worker March in
DC on Sunday October 17 which was only about 10,000
workers, nowhere near a million. A couple of people from
my union spoke (UTLA), NEA was one of the few national
unions that did endorse it. There was a substantial
anarchist presence include an IWW contingent and
people from several ARA chapters, and a mostly anarchist
solidarity march that arrived a little late.--Michael
