In a post 9/11 climate consisting largely of intolerance and
repression, there has been a lot of debate as to whether or not large
manifestations such as have occurred since Seattle are still proving
effective as a strategy against Empire.
For the first time since Chief Timoney and the Miami PD terrorized
protesters at the FTAA Ministerial in November, the large-scale
direct action demonstration tactic will be tested in two East Coast
metropoli, Boston in late July, and New York City in late August.
The Democratic National Convention is being held in Boston, July
26-28 this year and a handful of Boston area groups are organizing
direct actions and marches to protest the free-trade, pro-war,
police-state conservatism of the so-called loyal opposition in
Amerika. A significant turn-out is expected, though it will most
likely be less than the up-to-a-million or so folks anticipated for the
Republican National Convention in New York.
For those who have opted not to head to Boston due to financial
constraints, previous commitments, probation, or other myriad
reasons, consider organizing solidarity actions in your own
community.
A number of local targets are highlighted below, not as a means of
stifling creativity, moreso because a few imagination-sparks are
better than none.
The two painfully obvious locales to employ direct action/demos are
your local Democratic Party Headquarters (DPH) or the John Kerry
for President 2004 office (probably located in a half-vacated strip
mall somewhere in your town). If there is difficulty locating the
Kerry office, contact the DPH and ask.
A couple other ideas include billboard improvement campaigns,
particularly billboards advertising Kerry or the Dems. In my town,
there are these annoying "Get Out & Vote" billboards that push
voting as a medium by which to achieve social change. They could
use some improving too, if they’re in your area. Also, if word
gets out that the Boston PD/FBI/Secret Service get actively violent
against protesters in Boston (surely they will), target your local PD,
give ‘em hell, and let ‘em know you’re watching them
and not willing to take any shit.
Good luck and have fun. And hopefully your autonomous,
decentralized actions will take steps to expose your community to
the hypocrisy & corruption of the US elections process and to the
myth of US Democracy itself.
