Dear Friends - The invasion of Boston so often politely referred to as the
“democratic national convention” draws nigh. Kerry’s
repeated flip-flopping and refusal to take a stand on much of anything
outside of agreeing with Bush shows our two party democracy plainly as
the scam it truly is. You can have your choice of whichever pro-war,
pro-curtailing of civil liberties, pro-helping the wealthy and screwing
everyone else candidate you want.
Those of us involved with the Bl(A)ck Tea Society fervently hope and
believe that we can do much better than this. To illustrate our disgust and
bewilderment with the current state of affairs, we are engaging in a three
pronged plan. The first is to highlight our alternatives to monstrously
ineffective representative democracy with the “really really democratic
bazaar”. The second is to maintain a convergence center for the
duration of the event, and the third is decentralized direct action. However,
dissent doesn’t come cheaply and quite frankly, we need money to
make this all happen. Most of the larger progressive groups have decided
that anything is better than another four years of Bush, and are avoiding
any protest or criticism of the Democrats. This means that we are having
an extremely difficult time getting any sort of funding or grants from more
established and fiscally stronger groups. This is where you, the DIY

promoter, come in. Boston goes through boom and bust times of easy
availability for DIY shows and other events. Right now, space seems to be
kind of tight, to the frustration of everyone attempting to raise some
money through benefit shows and other events. Also, there are a limited
amount of people who come to these events in Boston, and you can only
put so much of the burden on such a relatively small group of people. To
such ends, we encourage, beseech, and extol all of you in other cities and
towns to do what you can to help us make enough money to do our work.
Book us a benefit show. Throw a yardsale or a bake sale. Start a lemonade
stand. Have a poker night. A keg party. Any kind of solidarity would be
greatly appreciated.
