It seems that under capitalism everything has a price…
even industrial action against your boss.
In the latest attacks on teachers in the north, school
management representatives have written to teachers to
warn that pay may be deducted from those in breach of
contact from August 1st if the current dispute over
back-dated pay (13,500 teachers are currently owed
£1000 each –see WCR#5) is not resolved.
Education Minister, Barry Gardiner, has set a deadline
for both sides to deliver a school development and
performance review scheme with a plan for
implementation before July 31st. Gardiner has warned,
however, that:
“...employers are advising principals to consider
authorising appropriate deductions from pay of those
who have been in breach of their contractual
obligations including Baker days.”
At a time when employers are supposedly in negotiation
with trade unions to resolve the dispute, it is
absolutely disgraceful that teachers are effectively
being punished for involving themselves in industrial
action. The implementation of the threat the day after
the review is a deliberate attempt to weaken teacher
morale, undermine solidarity and bully teachers into
submission.
Teachers must hold firm, and demonstrate their right
to take industrial action. They must not allow this
recent government move to detract from their campaign
to attain financial parity with teachers in England
and Wales.
