Marylebone Crime Information
from
                                  MaryleboneCrimeInfo@met.police.uk

We will attempt in this email to give you as much information as we can
regarding the proposed Mayday protests.

WHEN?
Tuesday 1st May 2001. This is a normal working day for London.

WHO?
Pacifists and activists in large numbers. At this time, it is estimated
that
between 6,000 - 10,000 protestors may be taking part in the day's
actions in
an
attempt to bring Central London to a standstill. It is intended to
disrupt
business and other activities of the normal working day. It must be
remembered
that the vast majority will be peaceful protestors. However, our
information
and intelligence clearly suggests that there is a hard core of perhaps
1,000
individuals who are bent on violent confrontation and criminal
activity.

WHAT AND WHERE?
The stated purpose of the demonstrations is to protest against the
'capitalist
system' based upon a giant game of monopoly. Information available at
this
time is that the events will start at 7.30am at Marylebone Railway
Station
where a critical mass of cyclists will be gathering. It is envisaged
that
the
cyclists' activities will include the disruption of traffic movement.

The organisers have suggested that groups create 'an action' at venues
shown
on the monopoly game. This could range from peaceful protest to
invasion of
shops and office premises.

You can expect 'actions' from early in the morning through to late
afternoon.
There is the possibility of public disorder.

Other events will be taking place all around Central London. These
events
range
from the cycle protest detailed above to protests outside a variety of
buildings and the construction of a cardboard hotel in Mayfair.

You should be aware that the Metropolitan Police Service has taken real
steps
to contact the people believed to be organising these events in an
attempt
to
seek their assistance. We have not yet had any response from these
individuals.

The culmination of the day's events is expected to take place in Oxford
Street
at about 4pm. This has been advertised by the organisers as the 'sale
of the
century' and 'free shopping' , whatever this may mean. The
Commissioner has
recently said "It now looks as though Oxford Street could be the target
of
sustained criminality. Whilst I would not go so far as to warn the
public to
avoid shopping in Oxford Street or other targeted locations, I have a
duty
to
advise prudence and warn that there may be disruption".

In relation to the police response, the Commissioner went on to say "
my
officers will do all they can to keep London running smoothly on May
1st so
that people in the capital can go about their lawful business". All
police
leave has been cancelled. The Metropolitan Police, City of London
Police and
British Transport Police will be working closely together.

At this time, it is anticipated that all public transport will be
running a
normal weekday timetable.

We are well aware, of course, that there may be deliberate
misinformation
about
events.

We will endeavour to keep you informed via this medium of new
developments
and
information. We will also send you details of crime prevention advice
to
assist
you to prepare for the day.
You would also be advised to read and listen to media reports.

You may find the Met. Police Internet site useful at www.met.police.

Where possible, please inform your staff of the contents of this email.
