ORGANIZERS NEEDED FOR MAY 11-13 CAMP FREE MUMIA
=20
Can you help organize participation in the Camp Free Mumia?
=20
We are creating a list of ORGANIZING CENTERS for the encampment=20
taking place over the weekend of May 11-13 at Philadelphia's City Hall.=20
An "Organizing Center" can be anything from a local contact person to=20
a large coalition.=20

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUMIA!=20
=20
April 24 is Mumia's 47th birthday (and his 20th birthday behind bars).
We're throwing a big party for him on Tuesday!
=20
Tuesday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.
Africana Student Cultural Center
825 Washington Ave at Ontario St (Stadium Village Mall)
Room 108
=20
The coalition has had the great fortune of having a number of student
interns working with us this semester. One of their projects is this
birthday tribute to Mumia. Plans include a video clip, dancing, poetry and
a birthday cake. Please come out for some fun and to support Mumia and the
work of our student interns.
=20
This event is cosponsored by Africana Student Cultural Center and the Twin
Cities Coalition to Defend Mumia Abu-Jamal.

DAY X MAY BE COMING SOON
=20
Mumia may be having his first day in Federal court quite soon. In a recent
ruling, Judge William Yohn gave Mumia only 30 days in which to find new
counsel. Mumia had submitted a petition to dismiss his current legal team
due to a cited conflict of interests. Thus Mumia could be called back to
court any time after May 7th, and Mumia's fateful hearing ("Day-X") will
likely be scheduled for soon thereafter. This is Mumia's last guaranteed
appeal, and if it is rejected in whole by the federal court, a death
warrant would likely be signed immediately!
=20
At issue, will be Mumia's request for an evidentiary hearing. If granted,
this would permit Mumia to bring in all the new evidence that had been
blocked by the original trial judge, Albert Sabo. This is the evidence that
could prove Mumia's innocence, yet it remains inadmissible in court WITHOUT
the granting of this simple request.
=20
There are also 29 constitutional/procedural issues to be considered, and a
finding in favor of Mumia on any single one, would result in an overturning
of Mumia's conviction and his freedom, or at least a new trial.
=20
However there is nothing stopping Yohn from turning a blind eye to the
overwhelming legal strength of Mumia's appeal, and rubber-stamping the
frame-up. Nothing, that is, besides ALL OF US! For on "Day-X" when Mumia
finally has his "day in court," he will be joined by thousands of angry
supporters demanding his freedom! The outpouring of support in Philadelphia
will be joined by solidarity actions around the world, so that Yohn cannot
proceed in darkness. WE MUST JOIN MUMIA IN PHILADELPHIA ON DAY-X, AND STOP
THE FRAME-UP ONCE AND FOR ALL!!
=20
We are calling that "Day-X", because we don't when it will be, but we do
know where we will be: Philadelphia! Judge Yohn may announce the date of
that hearing on very very short notice, so our plans have to be made in
advance. We will work fast to fill our bus to Philly so people from the
Twin Cities can physically stand with Mumia in Federal court. See if you
can prepare to take off on short notice to get on the bus to Philly for
this historic event!
=20
In addition to that action in Philly, we will have a rally in Minneapolis
on the day AFTER we learn that Day-X has been set. You will be informed by
email as soon as we learn of that announcement. You can also check our
hotline to confirm the date of such an action (651-649-4579).
=20
Remember, this may be Mumia's final appeal. We can't just wait for a new
death warrant to make sure that they are serious about killing Mumia -- we
already KNOW that they're dead serious! In 1995 Mumia came within 10 days
of being executed before our pressure caused the government to relent. We
have use our power, or we'll lose Mumia!!
=20
Remember:
=20
RALLY the Day After Day X is Announced
Gather at 5:00 p.m. at Cedar & Riverside, West Bank, Minneapolis.
(Call 651-649-4579 for confirmation)
=20
STAND PHYSICALLY WITH MUMIA IN PHILADELPHIA on Day-X
A bus from the Twin Cities is being organized.
Once the date is announced, we may have only=20
a few days to fill the bus, so reserve your spot now.
Fare is $105 round-trip with some partial scholarships
available. Call 651-649-4579 for reservations, or to=20
request more info.
=20
In the unusual event that Yohn issues a decision without holding a court
session, there will be a demonstration immediately organized -- check your
email or the hotline.

MAY 12: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY FOR MUMIA
=20
Across the U.S. and around the world, May 12 will be marked as an
international day of solidarity with Mumia and we are doing our part here
in the Twin Cities. The timing of these actions is especially important
since Mumia is likely to go to Federal court very soon. We must show the
government that there is a strong national and international movement
prepared to resist the execution of Mumia. Don't wait to show your
support--NOW IS THE TIME TO GET INVOLVED! To help organize this
demonstration, come to our Wednesday meetings. Try to get support from your
organizations, and bring out your friends. It will be at:

MAYDAY CELEBRATIONS
=20
Mayday is a sure sign of spring and a sure sign of increased political
activity around the Twin Cities (and around the world where workers take to
the streets!). Like last year, there will be two Mayday events in the Twin
Cities and we will participate in both. These events have been among our
most important opportunities for getting out the word about Mumia and we
need lots of volunteers to help, especially on May 6. We are also looking
for a truck to help move the booth materials into and out of the park.
Please join us if you can! Call our hotline at 651-649-4579 to offer your
help.
=20
If you live in a different city, consider passing out Mumia information at
local Mayday events. That is where you are likely to reach those who will
stand with Mumia and protest on Day-X. If you do live in the Twin Cities,
meet us at these times:
=20
Tuesday, May 1st:
11:00 a.m.
Meet at Peavey Park, corner of Chicago & Franklin
March with our contingent (look for our beautiful Mumia banner!).
=20
Sunday, May 6th:
Meet at 12 Noon
25th St & 18th Ave S.
We will march in the Free Speech area of the Mayday parade and distribute
literature along the way. We will also have a booth in Powderhorn park. We
need folks to help in the march and at the booth.

On April 6, Judge William H. Yohn signed an order that conditionally=
granted
Mumia's request to change legal counsel. Contrary to the report in the
Philadelphia Inquirer, Judge Yohn gave Mumia 30 days, not 60 days, to=
obtain
new legal representation. It also appears from the wording that Yohn has
denied Mumia's request to serve as his own lawyer (pro se) while looking=
for
new legal counsel.

PRINCETON THEOLOGIAN CONDEMNS U.S. PENAL SYSTEM
MINNEAPOLIS (April 6, 2001) - In The Executed God, theologian Mark Lewis=20
Taylor dares to address the meaning of Jesus' execution for an American=20
culture that now maintains more than 3,600 U.S. residents on the death rows=
=20
of its burgeoning prisons. Drawing on 25 years of involvement in prison=20
reform, Taylor passionately describes and explains the excesses and=20
injustices in our corrections system and capital punishment to foster=20
compassionate and effective Christian action.
Since 1980 the number of prisoners in the United States has tripled to over=
2=20
million people, 70 percent of them people of color. This growth industry=20
currently employs 523,000 people. Among abuses that Taylor notes in this=20
"theater of terror" are capital punishment, inordinate sentencing,=
violations=20
of fairness in both process and results, racism in the justice system and=20
prisons, prison rape and other terrorizing techniques, and paramilitary=20
policing practices. The book is a call to conscience for all Christian=20
Americans who in effect support the prison system and the death penalty by=
=20
not protesting the injustice of the system or speaking out against it.
The victims of the iniquities of the penal system and the death penalty are=
=20
mostly poor, underprivileged, scorned people who have been rejected by a=20
system of imperialistic, capitalistic wealth, Taylor argues. Whether the=20
convicted are actually guilty of murder or other heinous crimes seems to be=
=20
largely irrelevant to the government that executes them-just as it was=20
irrelevant to the Romans who crucified Jesus Christ whether or not they=20
believed he was truly a traitor to the empire.=20
=20
Taylor's work examines what he sees as a maze of hypocrisy and moral=20
confusion and offers a constructive proposal of how and why Christian=20
practice might provide alternative approaches to the present consolidation=
of=20
prison building, police excessive force and the death penalty.
"A powerful critique of America as Empire and the challenge it poses for all=
=20
who believe in the way of Jesus."
-James H. Cone, Union Theological Seminary, New York
"Mark Taylor's absorbing examination of our shameful execution obsession is=
=20
without a doubt the finest and most discerning theological analysis of the=
=20
death penalty now available. There is no doubt that the question is once=20
again back in the public eye, and this graphic and penetrating book will=20
surely help focus the discussion we all need."
-Harvey Cox, Harvard Divinity School
Whatever happens in the next century, The Executed God will remain an=20
essential document of Christian conscience from this troubled time.
