Paolo Finzi, is an anarchist writer, editor and historian who lives in
Milano. For some 30 years, he has been one of the core editors of A -
Rivista Anarchica, a leading, wide-ranging and high quality monthly
anarchist journal (also sold at Jura Books) and he has written books on,
among others, Enrico Malatesta. He is visiting Australia briefly.
Italy has long had one of the largest and most influential anarchist
movements. Italian anarchism was a major, mass movement prior to its
partial crushing during the two decades of fascist dictatorship from 1922.
It was the dominant political presence in a couple of smaller cities, had
deep and strong support in a host of others and was widely influential
through the labour movement and in radical and free-thought circles.
Anarchist movements, organisations and groups published many
magazines and newspapers (including a daily - Umanita Nova. Anarchists
had their own union movement numbering some half a million (USI) and
took a leading role in an important 'apolitical' union (the railway workers'
union). Further, wherever Italians emigrated in numbers - to the USA,
Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Canada and even Australia, Italian
anarchism had a major influence on the labour and radical movements
(see eg the IWW and Sacco and Vanzetti in the USA). While they played
an important role attacking the fascist regime from outside Italy, Italian
anarchists again played a leading role inside Italy from 1943 with the
widespread popular resistance to facism from 1943 to 1945. Since then,
anarchism in Italy has had a number of higher and lower periods but has
always been able to maintain a sizeable presence in particular areas of
activity and to garner even wider sympathies among the public. The late
1960s to 1970s were years of particularly widespread and intense activity
and since then anarchist activists have broadened their spheres of
activities.
